"Nungesser- The Knight of Death"

Charles Nungesser was one of WW1's most flamboyant characters and France's third highest ranking ace. Daring, undiciplined and fearless, Nungesser survived several severe crashes, barely taking time to recover from his injuries. In this depiction, Nungesser, flying a Nieuport 17bis, has just shot an Albatros D.III down in flames. He had several silver Nieuports, each with his distinctive "Knight of Death" insignia on the side. Inside a black heart are a skull, a coffin and funeral candles, a grim promise to any German pilot that opposed him.

Nungesser survived the war with 45 victories. He was lost in a 1927 attempt to beat Charles Lindberg in crossing the Atlantic by airplane.
