"94th Aero- Flag Buses"

In January 1919 the 94th Aero Squadron, known as the "Hat In The Ring" squadron, was stationed in Koblenz, Germany as part of the Allied occupational force. In April the squadron flew their specially decorated SPAD XIIIs towards Paris for a French sponsored pennant presentation. I chose to paint this scene both because of wanting to paint Captain Reed Chambers "Stars and Stripes" and also simply because Allied planes almost never came close to matching the color and individuality of their German counterparts.
