On June 4, 1942 VT-8 took off from the USS Hornet to intercept the Japanese Fleet advancing on the US base on Midway Island. Flying Douglas TBD Devastator topedo bombers, it was VT-8's mission to try to sink the Japanese aircraft carriers. VT-8 became separated from their fighter escorts and were forced to mount their attack alone. Every aircraft of VT-8 was shot down by enemy Zero fighters with only Ensign George H. Gay, shown here, surviving. While the Zeros were occupied down at water level with VT-8 Douglas Dauntless dive bombers attacked from above, destroying three Japanese carriers. The battle for Midway Island crippled the Japanese carrier fleet and marked the first decisive U.S. victory against the powerful Japanese Navy.
